FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – The South Florence High School community is still shaken after one of the school’s coaches was found Monday in Lake Marion.
Troopers say, at around 8:30 Sunday night Michelle Hickson’s car crashed into the guardrail on I-95 near Santee.
A few minutes later another vehicle hit her car and at some point, she went into the lake and she died.
“You know it was kind of disbelief at first when they were talking about they couldn’t find her, you know, and then in them hours of just waiting you just got so much going through your head. It has been a little quieter today than normal,” said Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach Jeff Bley.
The 38-year-old coached both varsity volleyball and JV girls’ basketball at South Florence High School.
“I got into school this morning and broke down all over again,” said Quiana Hodge, who played both sports under Hickson.
She was also a former student at South Florence High and eventually became the school’s biggest cheerleader.
“If she wasn’t coaching she was doing stats. Evenings were South Florence. This was the best place in the world to raise her little girl and so she became everybody’s little girl,” explained Principal Carol Hill.
The South Florence Facebook page says all basketball games through Thursday are postponed. The school has not made a decision about Friday’s game with West Florence.
“I know that we are going to have to play really hard for her. Cause I know that even if she was still here she was going to be like ‘do better, play hard,’” stated LaKimbrea Fulton, another one of Hickson’s players.
“We may not be able to see her, but we look over there and know what she going to be telling us that we are going to have to play hard, have to stay in the game regardless of the score,” Hodge added.
Both a memorial Facebook page and a GoFundMe page have been set-up in Hickson’s honor.
According to the principal of South Florence High School, Hickson’s funeral will be at the South Florence High gym Saturday at 2 p.m. The family has asked for flowers, cards, and gifts to be sent to the home at 1831 W Sandhurst Drive, Florence, SC 29505 or to the Graham and Godwin Funeral Home in Lake City, SC.
