People ran after a crash with an Atlantic Beach police officer on Monday night, Atlantic Beach Police Chief Quentin Robinson said.

Chief Robinson told News13 the officer was heading northbound to back-up another officer that pulled a vehicle over around 11:55 p.m. on Monday. A white Chevrolet Impala was in the median, about to make a left turn into Pearls’ parking lot, and reportedly pulled out in front of the officer’s vehicle.

The officer’s car then hit the Impala on the passenger side, resulting in the officer hitting a parked white Tahoe vehicle in the parking lot, Chief Robinson also said. After the crash, the passengers of the Impala reportedly ran.

Chief Robinson stated police believe there may have been four passengers who ran from the Impala and the Impala contained marijuana and beer.

The officer was taken to a hospital for scrapes and bruises and has since been released.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
