LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – This week marks seven months since the body of 22-year-old Matthew Hunt was found in the woods off Alamac Road in Robeson County.

Deputies with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office say Hunt was shot to death, but no arrests have been made in the case. Now, the family says they are begging the public for answers.

Last July, Deanne Hunt sat down with News13 and talked about the murder of her son, Matthew, and through tears, she had one plea.

“Whoever done this, please come forward and tell and turn yourself in so we can have justice,” said Hunt.

Hunt said her son was on his way to work when he was shot to death and left in the woods, but seven months later, the family still has no answers.

“There’s always a frustration, you know, that people are pushed to the back burner,” said Matthew Hunt’s cousin Michelle Locklear. “I mean, we live in a community where this type of thing happens on a daily or weekly basis, and with every new homicide, there’s manpower, there’s detectives that’s pulled to that new scene that leaves the older cases out there, you know, growing colder or not having enough manpower to investigate.”

Like many unsolved cases in Robeson County, deputies say they can’t bring these families closure without help from the public.

The annual crime report from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation shows 859 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2014 in Robeson County. According to the report, Robeson County led the state in the number of violent crimes per county.

Investigators say Hunt’s case is still open, but without more evidence, the family is left to beg the public for answers.

“Every family deserves closure. You know, he wasn’t just a statistic. He was someone to a lot of people,” said Locklear.

News13 reached out to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office to see how many cases went unsolved in 2015, but we have not heard back.

“To anyone that may have any information, please come forward. It’s the right thing to do because tomorrow it could be you,” said Locklear. “You could be standing in this position, and you might have a family member that has been murdered an untimely death and you would want someone to come forward because somebody knows. They’re out there and somebody knows.”

If you have any information on Matthew Hunt’s case or any other case in Robeson County, you’re asking to call the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
