ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) – Friends, family and military supporters of some 200 Army National Guard soldiers are gathering to welcome an Anderson unit home from a yearlong deployment.
Members of the South Carolina Army National Guard’s 263rd Air Defense Artillery Battalion are coming home Wednesday after their deployment to defend the Washington, D.C., region.
The unit’s mission was helping ensure there were no air attacks against the region.
The deployments have taken place on a rotational basis since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Lt. Col. Marion Collins is the unit’s commander. Command Sgt. Maj. Russell Vickery is its senior enlisted officer.
The event is not open to the general public.
