A large sinkhole that opened up in North Myrtle Beach has been filled in as crew work to repair damage from a water line break.

Pat Dowling, with the City of North Myrtle Beach, tells News13 a 12-inch water line broke at 5th Avenue South and Hillside Dr. on Friday creating the sinkhole. The break was reportedly due to age.

Crews will spend the next two to three weeks fixing the damaged curb and sidewalk, and then crews will re-pave the road.

Dowling also says no water pressure was lost during the break, “which means there was no opportunity for drinking water to be contaminated.”

The city has about 500 miles of underground water pipes, according to Dowling. There are also about 140 miles of storm water drainage.
