Funeral services are planned for this weekend for 16 and 17-year-old boys who died in a crash near Surfside Beach on Wednesday night.
The crash happened around 8:30 at the intersection of Glenn’s Bay Road and Highway 17 and killed Gavin Clary Brunetti, age 16, from Surfside Beach and 17-year-old Riley Bloch from Conway.
Officials say the wreck happened when a 2014 Ford Focus was driving south on Highway 17, and Riley was driving a 1997 Chevrolet truck north. The driver of the Ford was turning left on Glenn’s Bay Road, when the Riley ran the red light and hit the Ford on the right side, officials said.
According to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard, Bloch and the passenger in the Ford, Gavin, both died Wednesday night at Waccamaw Hospital.
Riley was a Junior at Carolina Forest High School while Gavin was a student at St. James High School.
Gavin, who was born in Georgetown, was a part of the Coastal School Ministries, according to his obituary.
“He loved the ocean and surfing, was an avid skateboarder and a self taught talented drummer. Gavin was an awesome son, loving brother and a good friend,” his obituary said.
Riley was also a student at Palm Academy, according to his obituary.
“Riley leaves many close family and friends in his short 17 years. Anyone who spent time with Riley knew the places to find him were a mud hole, a duck hole, or a fishing hole,” his obituary said. “Always remember Riley will be with you the next time you are there.”
Services for Gavin will be at 5 pm, Sunday at Surfside Presbyterian Church with viewing one hour prior. Interment will be 10 am, Monday at Hillcrest Cemetery.
A funeral service for Riley will be held at 3:30 pm Sunday, at Tilly Swamp Baptist Church. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery.
