North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum welcomes Terry Hegglin, a retired US Army officer and business consultant. The event is Thursday, April 9 at 7pm. Terry will discuss events of the final days of the Civil War which lead to the surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. From negotiations through the laying down of arms by the remaining 28,000 men of the Army of Northern Virginia, Terry will provide insights on the activities and excerpts from 1865 publications. On April 9, 1865, exactly 150 years to the date, General Robert E. Lee surrendered what remained of his Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The surrender effectively brought about the end to a devastating war which lasted more than four years, destroyed much of the South, claimed over 600,000 lives, and changed our country forever.
Terry Hegglin and his wife Marie reside in Carlisle, Pa, and in North Myrtle Beach. He is the current President of Historic Carlisle, Inc., an organization which conducts numerous living history events for the colonial through Civil War periods. For 23 years the Hegglins owned and operated a historic bed and breakfast in Carlisle, where Terry conducted Civil War seminars focusing on the Gettysburg campaign. He is an avid Civil War historian and collector and performs presentations on a wide range of Civil War subjects for both public and private organizations.
