According to the Simpsonville Police Department, a teacher at Hillcrest Middle School was arrested Friday after receiving a complaint from school administration about an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Meghan Colleen Dougherty, 36 of Clinton was arrested and charged with criminal sexual misconduct with a minor in the 2nd degree.

The arrest resulted from an investigation that revealed Dougherty and a 14 year old female student had engaged in sexual acts as far back as January of this year.

Dougherty was a physical education teacher at Hillcrest Middle School during the time of the alleged crimes, and also coached the girl’s soccer and volleyball teams.

Greenville County Schools’ Communication Coordinator Susan Clarke released a statement about the arrest and stated that Dougherty resigned Thursday when the school’s principal Kelli Farmer met to discuss the allegations of an inappropriate relationship.

Clarke also confirmed that Dougherty cleared the initial background checks, including criminal and sex offender records.

Dougherty is currently being held at the Greenville County Detention Center on temporary bond awaiting arraignment.
