An outdoorsman in Australia got the “fright” of his life when he was reeling in a Threadfin fish — and discovered another creature was going to fight him for the catch

Ben Stack, who lives in the Cookstown area, runs the Facebook page of Cape York Guide to Explore, Hunt & Fish.

He explained in a photo post that his afternoon of fishing this week became one of  “fright” when a saltwater crocodile was at the other end of a fish he’d caught.

The incident started as Stack — who has many photos of crocodiles on his Facebook page — noted that the fighting fish had stopped fighting all together.

“No vibration, no kicking or head shaking, no fight, just a heavy dead weight. ‘Damn, he’s run under a log’,” Stack wrote on Facebook

So, Stack figured the fish got caught — maybe on “a large branch or log” — and so Stack leaned way out over the edge of the boat to get a look.

What took place in the next few seconds felt like a lifetime. Or was it that I felt like my life only had a few seconds. First, I saw a bit of silver, then I saw my lure with the fishes mouth wide open. I lifted the leader some more and leaned over further to see what the fish was hooked up on. It was at this moment, I realised I was staring eye to eye with a solid salt water crocodile. We were face to face and no more than 20 inches apart. Fright kicked in, I released the leader and flew backwards into the boat,” he wrote.
