The Spartanburg County Coroner reports that Everly Dickard, the 3-month-old baby brought to a hospital for non-accidental injuries has died.
Katie Wheeler Harris, age 32, was Dickard’s babysitter and has been charged with child abuse in the case.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office started investigating after says deputies were called to the hospital last month after the 3-month-old girl was brought in with injuries including bilateral subdural hematomas and retinal hemorrhages.
Medical staff told authorities the injuries were non-accidental. Baby Everly died on Monday.
Deputies were called to the hospital March 19 about suspected abuse and were told the child had a serious injury.
Deputies said Harris of Boiling Springs gave them conflicting stories before saying the child fell from a swing.
A funeral for Baby Everly will be held Friday at 4:30 pm. at First Baptist Church in Woodruff. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 pm Friday.
Harris’ attorney Robert Ianuario released a statement to Tuesday after she was released on bond from Spartanburg County Detention Center.
“At this time only one version of events is known to the public, based upon a set of incomplete but sensational facts. My client is steadfast that she is not guilty as charged, which we will bring to light in due course. I wish to remind the public that Mrs. Harris is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, not a court of public opinion. We ask that everyone join in praying for this child and her family, and we also ask that you respect the privacy of my client and her own family during this difficult time.”
