Ground game helps lead White team to victory
The game concluded the spring practice season for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers, who are seeking a fifth straight season of at least 10 wins, something that has never been accomplished in Clemson football history.
The victorious White squad rushed for 212 yards and passed for 195 yards in a balanced performance. The White team finished with 407 yards in just 53 plays, an average of 7.7 yards per play. The 60-minute game featured three 15-minute quarters of normal clock rules, but the fourth period was played with a running clock.
South Carolina fans had their first chance to watch the Gamecock football team in action at Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday afternoon, as the team held its annual Spring Game. The Black team would come away with the 14-13 win after scoring in the waning seconds on a pass from Michael Scarnecchia to Terry Googer.
The Garnet team used some big plays in the passing game to open the scoring on the game’s very first drive. Led by Connor Mitch at quarterback, the offense went 70 yards on four plays. Mitch set up the touchdown with a 42-yard completion to Jerell Adams. The team then turned to its secret weapon to convert, with Mitch hitting country music star Darius Rucker in the weak-side corner of the end zone for the 7-0 lead.
Coastal’s Black team defeats White team
The Coastal Carolina University football program concluded the spring practice season with the Black team defeating the White team by a 25-10 score in the annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon. The game, which was played at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach due to the installation of Teal Turf at Brooks Stadium, was followed by a meet and greet session between the Chanticleers and fans in attendance.
Three-time national coach of the year finalist Joe Moglia opened the day addressing the crowd to explain the game’s format, which was a complete deviation from the past three years as the squads played a half of live action. The 2015 game featured teams in black and white jerseys that were drafted by Alex Ross (black team captain) and Richie Sampson along with Leroy Cummings (white team captains).
