CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – An era of football and dedication to Coastal Carolina University came to an end Friday, as head coach Joe Moglia announced his resignation.
You can see Moglia’s influence by walking around the football and baseball stadiums at the TD Bank Sports Complex. Moglia was the CEO of TD Ameritrade a few years before coaching Coastal.
CCU’s president says Moglia not only helped secure the sports complex sponsor, but changed the lives of many students.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for having given me the privilege and the honor to be the head coach here at Coastal,” Moglia said.
After seven years, Moglia won’t be the head coach when Coastal Carolina opens its 2019 season, hosting Eastern Michigan University in an expanded Brooks Stadium.
“He has done such wonderful things with our students and our academic programs that it’s going to be hard to see him step away,” said CCU president Dr. David DeCenzo.
Moglia has written two books on football and investing, so the former head of TD Ameritrade brought his business knowledge to Conway, helping secure $5 million for Coastal’s athletics facilities.
“This whole complex that we’re standing in right now was something that he helped them get leads on and work on, in terms of working with TD Bank to name the sports complex,” said CCU athletic director Matt Hogue.
Hogue says Moglia’s financial connections have also helped CCU students prepare for their careers.
“He’s enabled students to be able to get time to spend with financial leaders around the country and those are doors that may not necessarily open in a conventional way,” Hogue said.
Moglia helped Coastal transition to FBS, which is the highest level of college football.
He’ll also help the Chants in their next phase as chairman of athletics, with executive authority over football.
“What makes it a little easier for me too is I’m still very much a part of our university and very much a part of our football program,” Moglia said.
Moglia had a motto for his players posted around the Coastal football facility here called “BAM.” It stands for “be a man,” but he says it has nothing to do with gender.
Moglia says “BAM” is about being a great leader and being responsible for yourself.
