LAKE CITY, S.C. (WBTW) – Travelers, artists and students were in Lake City viewing artwork Thursday.
One artist who competed for three years says Artfields is one of the best opportunities in the southeast and in South Carolina.
“It shows the art, promotes the art and the prize competitions can’t be beat”, said artist Lese Corrigan
2014 Artfields 50k winner Craig Colorussom took full advantage of the opportunity. In April 2014 he took home fifty-thousand dollars.
He says the experience was a “wild ride”.
“About an hour before before I got to Lake City, my wife called and said hey I’m going to the hospital. This baby is coming early,” said Colorussom.
The arrival of his baby girl didn’t stop Colorussom from traveling miles back and withdrawing from the competition. Along with becoming a father he became fifty-thousand dollars richer.
He says winning the competition at Artfields changed his life and the timing couldn’t have been any better.
“For the most part it gave me a chance to pursue other things and so I’ve put a lot of time and energy into two new pieces. One of them is inside called “Moon Phases”. Winning the competition really pushed my career forward probably like three to five years,” says Colorussom.
Colorussom has been in the band for the last 30 years and his love for music is what inspired him to create solar powered sun boxes.
“I’ve been driving around the country thinking about music and sound. I feel like I’ve been thinking about this piece for a really long time. sun boxes is twenty speakers that are all solar powered. They each play one guitar note and there’s no batteries, so the whole thing relies on direct sunlight.”
The awards ceremony will be held Friday in Lake City.
