MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Monday was the first real, cold day of the winter season in Horry County, however, even when Myrtle Beach is at its coldest, it doesn’t faze people who have moved to the area from the north.

“This is great. This is nothing,” said Roberto Fong, a local construction worker. Fong has lived in much colder places, including Kansas and Chicago.

Even when his job requires him to work outside on top of tall buildings during a cold day, he says he has found ways to stay warm.

“I work in construction right around here. Just the wind, it’s called the wind chill factor, affects the cold. I move around, move my arms, screw driver, the hammer to keep warm,” Fong said.

Others like Sherria Elliot were bundled up on Monday.

“I love (the cold weather) because I know how to prepare for it,” Elliot said.

She says a particularly cold day in Myrtle Beach is nothing compared to the winters in New England.

“I lived in Connecticut over 40 years, and this is like almost springtime to me. But, we’re against the water now, so you have to be really warm,” Elliot said.

According to Elliot, the key to bracing the cold is putting on extra layers.

“We’re nice and prepared for the weather. We won’t get cold. Trust me when I tell you.”
