MYRTLE BEACH – Hartsville rallied for two runs in the fifth inning to beat Myrtle Beach 3-1 in an elimination game in the Class 3A lower state tournament Wednesday.
The Red Foxes will play at Berkeley in another elimination game Friday. The winner of that game advances to face Gilbert for the lower state title Monday.
Michael Calamari put Myrtle Beach ahead 1-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. They maintained the advantage through four innings thanks to strong pitching from Praise Thorsen, but errors cost the Seahawks in the fifth. Thorsen couldn’t pick up Grant Thompson’s slow roller down the first base line with two outs. That allowed Austin Morris to score from third for a 1-1 tie. Chandler Melton followed with an RBI single to put the Red Foxes ahead 2-1.
Myrtle Beach put a runner on second with one out in the sixth, but Matt Lynch entered the game and retired back-to-back batters to keep the Seahawks at bay. Toby Burchfield added an RBI single in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 3-1.
