The brown shrimp season has started in South Carolina waters.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (

) the season kicked off Wednesday and is expected to run into August.

The season affects the first three miles off the coast. Shrimpers have been catching shrimp farther at sea already.

Tommy Edwards in Mount Pleasant said he pulled in more than 700 pounds of shrimp outside the three-mile limit Tuesday. Edwards said the shrimp were big and beautiful.

Sample trawling by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources suggested the catch would be good. Shrimp trawling in South Carolina waters has been poor for the past few years.

About 400 boats are licensed in South Carolina. That’s only about 25 percent of the number of licensed boats during the 1980s.
