UPDATE: The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement Monday, after an initial press release containing several surveillance photos:
“On April 21, 2015 a larceny of a wallet occurred. Taken from the stolen wallet was a credit card. The Financial Institution which issued the credit card was contacted and provided a date, time and location for a fraudulent transaction that occurred after the card was stolen. The information supplied by the financial institution was tracked to the Kangaroo Express at Blackgum Road. Based on the date, time, and dollar amount of the fraudulent charge, management determined that this transaction occurred at an external pump at that location. From this information Kangaroo Express provided video of the alleged transaction and a person of interest was developed. Exhausted efforts were made in an attempt to identify the individual depicted in the video to no avail. The individual of interest was placed on Facebook and sent to the media for possible identification. The individual was identified and determined not to be the perpetrator of the crime. It was not the intent of the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office to cause any duress or harm to the individual depicted in the photographs. Based on the information obtained pursuant to issuance of the photographs, the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office would like to apologize to the individual. They are not involved in this event at all.”
