If you live in Florence or commute, then you know firsthand how busy the Five Points intersection can be.

From the minute you reach the Five Points intersection it’s a waiting game.

“It’s ridiculous.  Something needs to be done.  I’ve known for years and years of people getting in crashes here,” mentioned Amy Ballou.

For Ballou, yesterday’s crash involving good friends Krystal Johnson and William Ray Johnson Jr. was a tough one.

“It was real emotional for me because they are such good people.  They always take care of others and making sure you are taken care of.  It broke my heart,” she said.

“Their son is my god son…so I want to make sure he’s taken care of after everything is said and done,” Ballou added.

The Florence Police Department reports 11 wrecks at the Five Points intersection in the last five years, with Wednesday’s crash being the only fatality.

They say most of the wrecks happened because drivers failed to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn.

S.C. DOT says previous studies looked at turning five points from a 6 point intersection to 4.

However, right now, the roads remain unchanged.

“It doesn’t make sense how two people can just be killed so suddenly from an intersection,” Ballou stated.

DOT says it regularly adjusts the timing of the traffic lights to help with traffic flow.

Florence Police have not released the cause of yesterday’s accident, but we’ll be sure to keep you up to date online and on air.
