SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – A Southern Pines company is putting a unique twist on the way they make American flags, they make their flags from scratch out of bourbon barrels.
The Heritage Flag Company makes dozens of different flags and presents them to veterans, wounded warriors and families of fallen soldiers.
The first flag was given as a gift to three Army Green Berets as a surprise when they opened their brewing company in Southern Pines in 2014.
“It’s really something that we literally dreamed of and presented it to a group of guys,” said Heath Trigg, the company’s founder. “It came from the heart, it was original, it was something that had never been done before.”
Trigg says the idea came to him in the middle of the night when he was dreaming about an American flag. He says he woke up and painted a picture of what he was dreaming about on a shopping list that his wife had sitting on their kitchen island.
He took the drawing down to the guys in the shop and they decided the flag would be made out of bourbon barrels. After several weeks, they came up with their first flag.
Since that first flag, the idea has taken off and they’ve received hundreds of orders and requests for custom-made flags. They’ve also traveled all across the country, donating dozens of flags to people who have served our country in many different ways.
“We know what this flag means to the people who fight for it,” said Trigg. “We’ve experienced some unbelievable things in the past few months and it’s an honor to be a part of it.”
