But how many times have you gone to the grocery store while your dryer was running? Fallen asleep while watching Gilmore Girls re-runs and left a candle burning?
The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has plenty of tips to prevent and prepare for home fires. As part of your prevention efforts, take a moment to understand and alleviate some home fire risk factors.

Plugged too many cords in an electrical outlet?
Left home for any period of time with an electrical appliance running?
Fallen asleep with an electrical appliance running?
Fallen asleep with a candle burning?
Used candles for light during a power outage?
Left matches or a lighter within arm’s reach of a child?
Smoked cigarettes in bed?
Left food cooking unattended on the stove?
Used kerosene or other space heaters to heat your home?

Let’s be honest – we’re all guilty of some of these once in a while.
Luckily, the Red Cross has great tips to help keep you safe and prevent fires. If the unthinkable happens and a fire starts in your home, there are also plenty of tools to help you get prepared.
Most importantly, families can take two simple steps that can save lives: checking or installing smoke alarms and practicing fire drills at home.
