ROBESON COUNTY, NC (WBTW) – There are new details regarding the man who was found dead in a wooded area on Alamac road in Lumberton.
According to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Matthew Hunt was found shot to death Wednesday after he was reported missing on Monday.
This case is now being treated as a homicide, and the family is begging the community for answers.
Hunt’s mother, Deanne Hunt, says she reported her son missing after his moped was found on the side of the street Monday night.
“They just don’t know what they took away from me, I just can’t take it. They took a lot from me when they took my child from me. It’s hard for me,” said Hunt’s mother.
She says he was on his way to work at Cracker Barrel when he went missing.
Major Anthony Thompson with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office says two days after he was reported missing, deputies found Hunt’s body in the woods across the street from where his moped was found,
Now, Hunt’s mother has one plea.
“If there’s anyone out there, please help. I’m just begging you, please. Whoever done this, please come forward and tell and turn yourself in so we can have justice,” said Hunt’s mother.
Just last week, Hunt’s girlfriend says the two were planning a wedding. Now, she’s left to plan his funeral.
“It hurts knowing that I will never walk down the aisle with him. I will never see myself being his wife. It’s just never going to happen. I mean, it hurts. It hurts going from talking about marriage, talking about a beautiful place that would be good to have our wedding to me going to his funeral on Sunday,” said Ashley Hunt.
What she says hurts most is explaining to their daughter that her daddy is never coming home.
“She has asked where her daddy is. I did tell her that he had gone to heaven to be with the angels and that he would always look over us,” said Hunt’s girlfriend.
Matthew Hunt did not have life insurance, and now the family is struggling to pay for the funeral costs. All donations can be made to Revels Funeral Home in Lumberton.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office says they do have a strong lead on this case, and they are working to get answers as soon as possible.
