FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Monday in the death of the young mother of his child.
Britny Jordan Puryear, age 22, was found by police with a gunshot wound to the head at her Fuquay-Varina home on Bridge Street on Nov. 6, 2014.
Logan Connail McLean, now age 23, was questioned in the shooting and then charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, authorities said.
Puryear and McLean were dating and had a then 4-month-old child together, police said. All of them lived at the residence where the shooting occurred.
McLean was sentenced to serve a prison term of between 26.4 years and 32.7 years, officials said.
Since Britny’s death, the Puryear family has been outspoken about domestic violence.
“You can talk to anyone. You don’t have to go through this. You don’t have to be like my big sis,” brother Josh Puryear said at a one-year remembrance of his sister’s death in 2015.
The family has tried to raise awareness about domestic violence.
“If it can happen to Britny, it can happen to anyone. Young ladies, if your boyfriend is hitting you or hurting you he does not love you,” Britny’s father Stephen Puryear said at the event.
“She was a hard worker. And she was an athlete A-B honor roll. She was the last person that anyone would think would be murdered,” Stephen Puryear added.
