FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – The South Carolina Dance Theatre returned to the center theater stage Saturday for a performance of the classic Swan Lake.

The South Carolina Dance Theatre puts on two shows a year at the Performing Arts Center in Downtown Florence.

More than 60 girls from ages five to eighteen years dressed up in their costumes and dancing shoes Saturday afternoon for a performance that has never been performed by the South Carolina Dance Theatre in the past 18 years. Students practiced nearly four months before the big show Saturday.

One performer says Saturday’s performance of “Swan Lake” is special to her because it’s her first time dancing to it and being one of the main characters.

“I really want to set a good example for them because once you are able to dance these roles you have to just enjoy it while you can and you have to work really harder when your younger so i just want to set a good example for everyone,” said 16 year-old dance student Caitlin Holt.

“It offers kids an opportunity who wants to go further on with ballot. Some of them have gone to U-S-C in the college program that is in the dance program,” said South Carolina Dance Theatre Director Susan Rowe.

Before becoming a student at the South Carolina Dance Theatre each aspirant will have to audition. Organizers say the dance program give the girls an opportunity to showcase what they learned and developed as they wish to move on to a professional career.
