MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) A man is dead after being shot by Myrtle Beach Police early Saturday morning.
Lieutenant Joey Crosby with the Myrtle Beach Police Department says officers were called to 21st Avenue North and Grissom Parkway just after three o’clock a.m. Saturday for a report of a man acting strange.
According to Crosby, the officers involved are PFC. Jeff Thomas, PFC. Brendan Hyde, and PFC. Michael Hearon.
When they found 55-year-old Donald Andrew White, he had a gun in his hand. Lt. Crosby says the officers began talking to White and a negotiator was called to the scene.
Crosby says White showed the weapon in a manner that made officers fear for their life so they fired at him.
According to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden, White died at Grand Strand Medical Center. McSpadden says White recently moved to Myrtle Beach.
According to Thom Berry with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, there are SLED agents on the scene at the request of the Myrtle Beach PD.
Agents from the region, Columbia and Crime Scene will continue their work which will result in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors. The information gathered in the SLED investigation will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors in the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The officers have been placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.
This is the second officer involved shooting with PFC. Jeff Thomas. According to Lt. Joey Crosby officer Thomas was shot during a traffic stop in 2009.
According to SLED this is the 11th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2016 and the first this year involving an officer of the Myrtle Beach Police Department. In 215 there were 48 officer involved shooting incidents in South Carolina and none that involved the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
