DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – PETA is now offering a $5,000 reward for help finding the person responsible for duct taping the mouth and eyes of a dog and abandoning her on a Darlington County street.
The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office is asking the community for help after a dog was found with its head and mouth duct taped.
Sheriff Wayne Byrd says deputies received an anonymous call about a dog walking around the 900 block of Rogers Road in Darlington on Monday. Deputies were able to catch the dog to remove the tape and took him to the Darlington County Animal Shelter for care and treatment.
Workers at the shelter say they have named the dog Aurora. She is currently being treated for heart worms and an infection in her foot, but employees believe she will make a full recovery and will eventually find a forever home.
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crime.
“This dog had already endured being malnourished and infested with parasites, and we can only imagine the pain and terror that she felt when she was duct taped and left to die,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately, before the culprit hurts anyone else.”
Aurora will be at the shelter for an extended period of time to make sure she recovers fully, but workers say she has made a vast improvement within the 24 hours of being found with duct tape around her head and mouth.
