NASHVILLE, TN (AP) – Manager for Merle Haggard says the country legend has died in California at age 79.

Haggard, born in 1937 just outside of Bakersfield, California, died April 6, 2016, which was also his 79th birthday.

According to Tasteofcountry.com, the country icon cancelled tour dates in December 2015 after learning he had double pneumonia when he was checked into a hospital.

Haggard’s musical work includes country hits like “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “Branded Man,” “Sing Me Back Home,” “Mama Tried” and many more.
