TIMMONSVILLE, S.C. (WBTW) – Several turned out in Timmonsville to give their opinions about what might work best and also what might not work to improve the schools in downtown Timmonsville.

It hasn’t been long since the state department of education took action to try and fix schools in Timmonsville. The mayor says he hopes meetings like the one Thursday night will foster a dialogue that will push education in the right direction.

“We care about our kids,” said the Mayor. “We want quality education for our kids.”

The mayor, leaders from different school districts and other educational experts met to help parents learn what Timmonsville students need to be the best equipped for the next level. Many parents and teachers said they wanted to embrace the positive things that already exist in Timmonsville schools, and pressed the leaders to focus less on the negativity that many feel has infiltrated their schools.

“We need to support the children,” one parent said. “We need to talk about the positives just as much as we talk about the negatives.”

Many of the experts pressed the parents and teachers to decide what the students really need to ensure a successful future. Some parents spoke about the loss of vocational classes like mechanics, electrical and plumbing, jobs many of them say have left the area though they offer good pay without the cost of a college degree.

“We’re gonna have to get the community involved,” the Mayor said. “Parents have to start at home with the kids.”

Most felt the meeting was very successful. They are looking forward to another meeting in the next four weeks at the church. They think that meeting will continue the path toward growth and success for students in their town.
