New Orleans, LA — Junior guard DJ Williams of the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team was voted to the All-Sun Belt first team, it was announced Monday as the league released its 2018-19 all-conference and individual award winners.
It is Williams’ second straight season earning All-Sun Belt honors as she was named to the second team as a sophomore in 2017-18.
A three-time Sun Belt Player of the Week this season, Williams led the conference in scoring averaging 18.1 points per game. She also ranked third in steals (2.1), fourth in assists (3.9), ninth in rebounding (7.0) and 14th in field goal shooting percentage (44.8). Williams was additionally one of the best student-athletes in the nation at getting to the free-throw line this season, ranking 12th nationally in free-throw attempts and 23rd in free-throw makes.
The Moreno Valley, Calif., native scored in double digits in all but two of her appearances this season, including eight games where she scored 20 or more points. As one of the league’s assists leaders, Williams dished out five or more helpers in 12 of 24 games played. She also pulled in double-digit rebounds in four games to record four double-doubles for the year.
Williams and the Chanticleers enter the 2019 Sun Belt Women’s Basketball Championship as the eighth seed for the second time in the last three seasons. Coastal hosts No. 9 Arkansas State at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 11 at the HTC Center. The winner of the first round game advances to Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, and will play in Wednesday’s second round game against No. 5 Appalachian State.
