MURRELLS INLET, SC (WBTW) A Sunday morning fire left a Murrells Inlet family without a home.

According to Capt. Rodney Jewett with Murrells Inlet Fire Department the family was inside when the fire started but was able to escape without any injuries.

Capt. Jewett says the home on Surfwind Drive is a complete loss.

Firefighters from Surfside Beach and Midway helped fight the fire.

Neighbors say it was an especially tough loss because the family has two children with special needs; and both parents suffer from health conditions.

“She has cancer and he’s not doing well, he has his own problems. So it’s a hardship, it’s a real hardship,” said Ronnie Figura who lives next door.

Figura said he and his wife woke up to a loud roar, which was the neighbors house on fire. He ran outside and says the back porch was completely overcome by flames.

Figura said firefighters were quick to respond and put out the fire, but the home was destroyed.

It happened during an already difficult time, Figura said it would have been the first Mothers Day the family spent without one of their moms.

“They lost their mother recently and its such a shame on Mothers Day to have this happen,” said Figura.

A go fund me page has been set up for the family, the cause is still under investigation and the Red Cross is assisting the family.
