REMBERT, S.C. (AP) – Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a church in Rembert over the weekend.

Local media outlets report that no one was inside Union Baptist Church when the fire started on Saturday afternoon. Several groups including the church choir had been there earlier in the day.

Joey Duggan of the Sumter Fire Department says the church was engulfed in flames by the time fire officials arrived.

Authorities have asked the State Law Enforcement Division to help in the investigation into what started the fire.
