AYNOR, SC (WBTW) – Drivers heading to the beach on Highway 501 through Aynor were supposed to see flashing yellow lights this weekend, but SCDOT canceled plans to replace the traffic signals.
The pilot program was supposed to occur during peak traffic hours Saturday and Sunday.
They were going to test to see if flashing yellow lights on beach bound 501 and flashing red on the side streets would ease congestion.
But some drivers were worried that could lead to more crashes, so the department of decided to hold off due to the safety concerns.
“We wanted to make sure they were comfortable and we were comfortable with it before we tried it, all that played in with maybe waiting a little bit and making sure we’ve got all the concerns addressed in a way that suits everybody,” said Joey Skipper, an assistant traffic engineer with SCDOT.
Skipper said easing congestion is still concern and the flashing light pilot program could be still be tried sometime this summer.
