CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Monday’s Horry County Schools work session meeting was also the first time the district’s board gathered since the death of its chairman.
Joe DeFeo was remembered at the start of Monday evening’s meeting with flowers and an in memoriam banner next to his seat in the board’s meeting room. DeFeo died earlier this month at the age of 65.
His fellow board members say they’ll remember DeFeo as a dedicated member of their team.
“Joe DeFeo had a passion for the students and the families of Horry County,” said Sherrie Todd, who represents district 2 on the HCS board. “He loved the teachers and all the administrators. He wanted us to have the very best.”
“As an only child, I never had the opportunity of having a brother, but if I did, it would be him,” said David Cox, who was unanimously elected the board’s interim vice chair Monday. “I’ll miss him.”
Vice chair Neil James now serves as the board’s interim chair.
James says he’s not interested in running for board chair in November and will focus on his district 10 reelection bid.
