MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Students from the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology raised $17,568 on Friday night to help local families affected by pediatric cancer.

The fundraiser was organized by the Students in Action Team and all proceeds went to the nonprofit Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas.

“As leaders, we want to help as many people as possible. We want to make a difference in the world,” said SCTSA State President and AAST student, Jaan Nandwani.

The students started planning the event last fall and voted on an organization to support.

“This was one that impacted all of us because we all know someone who’s been impacted by cancer,” said Nandwani. The event included a three course meal, a silent auction and a raffle at the Dunes Club.

“We are so excited,” said the Executive Director of Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas, Laura Allen. The organization provides transportation, food and lodging for treatment care for children battling cancer.

“When a child leaves Myrtle Beach to go to MUSC for treatment, they’re driving 110 miles each way and many times that could be every day for six weeks. Then it could be every day for two and a half years. Many, many, many visits back and forth,” said Allen. “We make sure that when they’re in Charleston that they have food and gas.”

Over one hundred people attended the event and all proceeds will help children and families in Horry and Georgetown Counties.
