GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – The Georgetown Police Department is investigating after a handgun was found inside a middle school student’s coat pocket, according to district officials.

Georgetown County School District Director of Safety and Risk Management Alan Walters says around 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon a student at Georgetown Middle School reported that a classmate may have a gun at the school. The principal and School Resource Officer removed the student alleged to have a gun from the classroom and recovered an unloaded .38 caliber handgun from the student’s coat pocket.

School officials did not find any bullets on the student or in his locker or bookbag.

Walters says the student has been recommended for expulsion, as required by state law, and could face criminal charges pending an investigation by Georgetown police.

The name of the student was not released and school officials did not comment on where the student got the gun.
